We’re happy to report that the Downtown Cantina is beginning to be a hopping place in its new location, even on weekday evenings. It is a great little Mexican restaurant and bar, a block from our building. It is a drinkers’ bar, which we don’t mind, since it is fun to hear the loud drunken conversation during dinner (we have odd tastes).
They have great happy-hour specials and a fantastic lunch buffet that we have gone to a number of times. Stop by, and enjoy the best little Mexican restaurant downtown.

If you want some interesting and inexpensive American and Mediterranean food, check out Slay’s on Zaytoon. We have no idea what the name means, but they have friendly staff, and some really tasty food. And they stay open till 7 or 8pm, which is great for grabbing a light dinner.
Rose Martelli gave them a pretty good review in St. Louis Magazine, and I think they have taken the advice to heart. It is a great place to grab a bite.

We walked to Lumière Place again for lunch today (well, Father’s Day brunch), and had a blast—the Lumière Link, the new underground walkway that cuts under Highway 70 near the Edward Jones Dome makes it very convenient for downtowners. And through the end of June, if you use one of the coupons that you can pick up at many downtown establishments, you can get two for one at their magnificent and decadent buffet. We got ours at Baladas Bistro on 9th Street. And still as of today, you can also get them at the entrance of the Lumière Link. Today, the coupon saved us 22 bucks, and earlier this week, another coupon saved us $13.00, which amounted to an outrageously delicious smorgasbord for only $6.50 per person, and that includes non-alcoholic drinks. You can also use the same coupon for free appetizers or desserts at other restaurants at the casino, but only one coupon can be used per person per day.

The entrance to Lumière Link is somewhat muted for a classy casino, but it quickly gets a bit more opulent.

The not-too-subtle sales pitch to gamble and gamble hard but smart is a nice touch. There are very short how-tos on the large number of flat screens about every fifty feet for the whole moving walkway.

The only downside was the incredibly long line we had to wait in to finally eat. The upside? It is the best buffet we’ve enjoyed anywhere. Very high quality food, not the stuff you’d find at the troughs at the other family buffets in the suburbs, where I almost never let D.J. talk us into going to. There was Asian food, a great breakfast buffet, a couple salad bars, scrumptious hot vegetarian options, lots of meat options if that’s your thing, over-the-top dessert choices, and if you get there before 11am on Sundays, champagne. Plus, we got free Lumière Place caps when we checked in! Get your coupons and use them by the end of the month. And say hi if you see us there!
