Historical Facts About Downtown Chicago

Chicago is the largest city in the state of Illinois. In fact, Chicago, Illinois, is the third largest city in America. The city has many nicknames “Windy City “, “a city that works” and “City of Big Shoulders.” The Chicago River of Chicago helped grow from a small trading post for an important center for trade and shipping.

The French settled along the Chicago River in 1696, but abandoned the area some years later due to raids by Native Americans. The first permanent settler in Chicago was not native of the country, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, who built a farm at the mouth of the Chicago River in the 1780′s. In 1795, following the Northwest Indian War, some Native Americans gave the Chicago area to the United States for a military post in the Treaty of Greenville.

  • The first birth was recorded in Chicago in 1796 of Eulalia Pointe du Sable, daughter of Jean-Baptist Pointe du Sable and his Potawatomi Indian wife.

Heartworm Facts And Basic Information

Heartworm disease is a parasitic roundworm that develops inside the right side of the heart. These worms damage it and lessen the efficiency of the lungs and liver amongst the other vital organs of the body. This is the disease that engendered alertness and caused alarm to the health condition of dogs, cats, mammals and other wild animals such as coyotes, wolves, muskrats, and the like that are situated in the United States of America, Canada, Alaska, Atlantic and along the Gulf Coast and Mississippi River Valley.

The transmission and development of these worms from one infected host to another is through blood sucking of mosquitoes. Female adult worms that are 10 inches long give birth to worms that are called microfilariae. These microfilariae are microscopic in size. They circulate in the blood of the host from which the mosquitoes would suck. The ingested microfilariae in the blood will develop to young larvae and will stay in the mouth of the mosquitoes. When the mosquito sucks blood through the skin of another animal, the larvae will then leave the mouth of the mosquito and will eventually penetrate the skin and muscles of the new host and from the skin and muscles, the larvae will go the right side of the heart of the infected host and will mature there. Serious and irreversible damage to the lungs and heart could result to this kind of infection. One of the most common pathological processes observed due to heartworm disease is inflammation of the pulmonary artery. This is one of the effects of heartworm disease. The persistent irritation of adult worms in the right side of the heart thickens and roughens the pulmonary artery. Because of this, blood clots form which then caused back pressure to the lungs since the opening of the miniscule blood vessels’ is blocked. Contacting an animal doctor for your dog when you sense that your pet may be infected is a good step towards acting upon this problem and preventing possible spread by treating what could be found. However, a free-living wild animal that’s infected of heartworm disease may not be treated as this has been deemed as not feasible yet.  Read more...

Eel Fishing – Learn the Facts That Can Help you Catch the Trophies

Despite the fact that most eels are predators, many people consider them like the right choice for a home aquarium. However, eels are also a perfect catch for anglers, consisting of 4 suborders of the Anguilliformes with 19 families, 110 genres and near 400 different species.

Anguillidae is the suborder of freshwater eels, but there are also Heterenchelyidae, Chlopsidae (false morays), Myrocongridae, Moringuidae (worm eels), and Muraenidae (moray eels). Other classification based on the FishBase System, dividing eels into 15 families. In fact, there are several classification databases including the ITIS, and Systema Naturae 2000, each one giving different categories and suborders.

Juvenile American eels (Anguilla rostrata) are one of the varieties of freshwater acclimated eels in the United States. Originally found in Lesueur, Minnesota back in 1817. This snake-like fish used to appear more frequently in the state than they do today, when they are more commonly seen along the lower Mississippi River

Following the Mississippi’s tributaries, including the Minnesota, Saint Lawrence Seaway, and Saint Croix rivers, anglers can find them profusely in the area, and sometimes in Lake Superior. Freshwater Females Eels swim all the way up the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico to reach Minnesota for reproduction.

When eels are not migrating, it is easy to find them in medium to large size lakes and streams with quiet waters and muddy bottoms. Eels are more active at night, so they need the mud or underwater objects to be hidden during the day. Sure, the Internet may prove more updated when it comes to information, but you cant carry the Internet everywhere. And believe it or not, its always much more gratifying to pull out a Caribbean travel guide from your carry case, flip a few pages open, then slip it right back when youre tried of reading. It sure beats having to wait in the airport, sitting bored silly and wondering whether or not your flights going to be delayed.


That said, dont cling to travel guides religiously. Many travelers make that mistake. They are not the bibles that they are made out to be by some people.
